While next week’s possible teacher strike is looming, many students have mixed feelings about the repercussions they might face. Many seniors are feeling anxious about the effects the strike will have on their early applications. Brody Schwartz ‘20 commented, “If the teachers are not able to reach a deal, they could strike for a long time. I hope it is not as long as the 2012 strike. I still need my teachers to finish my letters of recommendation, and the teachers will not have enough time to complete them by November 1st.” Teachers are often asked to write 20 letters, and many seniors fear they will not be able to complete them by the early application deadline.

While many upperclassmen are worried, the younger students have a different opinion about the teachers strike. Whitney Young’s underclassmen are excited about the prospect of missing school for an extended period of time. Neil Rockey ‘22 reported, “It is going to be great to have a teacher strike after the long weekend. I hope the teachers are able to reach a deal with the city, but I don’t mind missing a couple more days of school. Even ackies are excited about the upcoming strike. Ivo Hoying ‘24 said that he planned to spend the strike hanging out with his friends, and the strike was nice because even if school was extended, his 8th grade graduation would be the same date. Whether you are an underclassmen or a senior, pay attention to this week’s news on the upcoming strike.
