CPS Teacher Strike

CPS Teacher Strike

Gabriella Kurkulis, Author

The Chicago Teachers Union recently announced that on October 17th they will be striking. The Union held a vote to determine whether or not they wanted to continue to have the strike. The outcome was a 75% vote in favor of it. Due to this, it will be held unless their demands are met. Some of the issues  include an increased amount of teaching aids in the classrooms, more nurses in schools, smaller class sizes and a librarian in every school. This Whitney Young seniors are scared that the strike could hurt the timing of some of the earlier application deadlines. Time is the only factor that can determine our fate.

Question:

“What are you thoughts on the CPS strike that may be happening next week?”

A senior weighed in saying ”  I hope that the teachers do not go on strike, but, at the same time I hope that the teachers take as much time needed in getting what they want,” said Alondra Lozano, ’20.

” I don’t feel super well informed. I guess I side with the teachers. But, it doesn’t really affect me because I have chamber camp then,” noted Emily Nelson, ’21.

One underclassmen, Jack Kiely, 22’, stated, ” I think that it’s hopefully not going to last too long so the school year  goes into the summer. But, if it is short, it will be fairly nice .”

These are just some of the view of other Whitney Young students, I hope the teaches are successful with their requests.
