On August 12, 2019, Whitney M. Young Magnet High School opened the new Michelle Obama Sports Complex. The school had previously not had an easily accessible home field for their sports teams to utilize. Most of the sports teams that required a field had to commute to other local fields to play. The sports complex will be used for practices and games for the teams. The community will also be able to use the sports complex. Many had been anticipating the opening of the complex since it was announced in September 2018.

When asked if they thought the Michelle Obama Sports Complex was a good investment for the school, many students had differing opinions. Dena Mitchelle ‘20, said, “Yes, because a lot of sports will use it.” On the other hand Ali Schreibman ‘22, stated, “No. I think three gyms and a swimming pool is sufficient. [The Young Company] has had the same lights for 30 years.” Many students were somewhat neutral on the subject. Bryce Ferrall ‘23, said, “Yes, but the priorities of the school were kind of out of whack. I think the money could have gone towards other more important issues.” Overall, the sports complex has had mixed opinions from the students of whether it was a good investment for the school and the community.
