Teenage Vaping Problems

Chicago Public Schools recently sent out a letter warning parents about the dangers of vaping. It has recently been brought to light that many teenagers have been using e-cigarettes such as Juuls. Lately, there has been more and more news on the side effects of using these e-cigarettes and how many teens have been hospitalized by the use of these vape products. Schools everywhere have been implementing new detectors in classrooms and bathrooms to catch any students that might be partaking in these harmful vape products. Legal action is also beginning to stop teenagers from purchasing these products as well.

The CDC reported that about 1 in 10 high schoolers vape and 1 in 20 middle schools use vape products, too. It has also come out that vape products contain many harmful chemicals as well as heavy metals. This is very dangerous to anyone’s health; as of this writing, vaping has killed approximately six people. It is very dangerous to use vaping products and it is highly recommended that people  quit if they are a habitual vape user. For those who may find the addiction difficult to overcome, there are numerous websites and many outlets to help people quit vaping.

Students from Whitney have commented on what they think of the news about vaping. “I think it’s the fault of vaping companies who advertise their products to younger and younger audiences and make vaping, which is a very dangerous activity, seem appealing through fun and fruity flavors.” said Claire Macellaio, ‘21. Faith Lam, ‘20 said, “It’s basically affirming what I believe which is that it is so bad for your health and it’s really not worth it to vape just because it might be fun, but it’ll hurt you so much more in the long run.” “It’s good to raise awareness for how bad vaping is,” said Grace Chen, ‘22.

Many different public spaces  are installing similar signs (such as the one above) to stop people from vaping. Similar to how signs against smoking in certain places exist, his is becoming the new campaign against smoking or inhaling carcinogens.
