Lyrics+Matter

The music industry expands over many genres. Around the Globe many nationalities indulge in many different cultures. These cultures may cross, inadvertently. This happens when individuals venture out from their norm and embrace other cultures and musical interest, I am one of those individuals. The lyrics of a song and the rhythm of the music,is what grabs and holds the audience. There is a south Korean all male K-Pop Group called BTS, whose lyrics and music reaches out to all nationalities and cultures,  Their lyrics are very inspiring. Their current album series of “LOVE YOURSELF” has songs that teach you about loving yourself and accept others as they are.

BTS broke not only the cultural barriers through K-Pop but also broke the social stereotypes and obstacles by spreading powerful messages through their songs. Their songs often deliver powerful messages by including themes of female-empowerment, social injustice, and mental health. Their music has a lasting effect on the listener. The members of BTS, write their songs as a reflection of what they have and are currently going through. They are relatable to the young and and older generation. I know how much I admire and connect with their lyrics, so I asked some fellow students what their opinions were towards BTS. Some have heard of them but haven’t delved deep into them like Jennifer Gomez, class of ‘20, who says “I know of them, they’re everywhere. I’m vaguely aware of what’s happening”. Other are either supporters like Allison Chhay ‘21 who expressed that BTS “helps me not only feel better about myself but see the positives and not the negatives”,  or just casual listeners like Joseph Alexander ‘24 that just “really likes their rappers”.    No matter the gender or race the group BTS spreads the “Love myself” message in many ways.

Because they are a K-Pop group their song are in Korean and some in Japanese. This doesn’t stop their fans(ARMY) from appreciating them and their culture.  BTS  has many songs on their new album that promotes Love. A verse from the LOVE MYSELf – ANSWER series. “You’ve shown me I have reasons I should love myself My breath, the path I walked, it all answers for me”.  Their lyrics and love message has grabbed the attention of the United Nations. Those stories constantly remind us of our responsibility. So let’s all take one more step. We have learned to love ourselves, so I urge you to “speak yourself”, RM – BTS highly intelligent leader – said. “No matter who you are, where you’re from, your skin color or gender identity, speak yourself, find your name and find your voice by speaking yourself.”
