Whitney Young Basketball: A Dominant Force

Whitney Young Basketball: A Dominant Force

Paul Thomas

The Whitney Young boys basketball team has had a great season and it may only get better as the playoffs are arriving soon and expectations are extremely high. Last year’s team went to the state championship and people around the school want them to do the same this year. Right now, the team stands at 16-6 with a high chance of winning state. Their most impressive competition consists of Curie High School and Simeon High School. Whitney Young’s basketball team is coached by Tyrone Slaughter, who is trying to win his second championship in three years. He has done well this season in trying to achieve that goal. The team has a three headed monster that consist of Tyler Beard, Myles Baker, and DJ Steward that is coupled with the dynamic skills of players like Justin Warren, Keenan Jones, and many others giving contributions to the this team. The one problem that many see with this team is the lack of experience because only one person on the team currently has won a championship. The lack of experience may cause them to lose in the big moments where experience is key. Just coming off a major win against Orr, Whitney Young is gaining a lot of heat as they try to continue their winning streak while going into the Chicago Public Schools basketball playoffs. Jimi Taiwoa 20’ says,”I have always loved basketball and I feel like this is one of our most complete teams because of how many options we have to score because when they guard someone there is always somebody who can score for us.” Another student described the hisory of the Whitney Young basketball program, saying that, “coming up in the Whitney Young basketball program has been hard because the expectations for the program our high because of the legacy behind it so it is an expectation to win state most years,” Isaiah Wright 21’. The last quote is from Eve Taylor (Class of 2019) says,” feel like this is one our best teams and we should do something great this year.” This shows you how this team is coming together and with effort may be a state champion in a month.
