Attendance: Principle or Punishment?

Attendance: Principle or Punishment?

Paul Thomas

A new attendance policy was created to try raising the attendance rate, but its efforts have been viewed poorly because of all the backlash it has received. Most believe that it is not beneficial and that it’s causing problems for the senior class. Dashaun Edwards ( Class of 2019) says, “It limits us to seven days of unexcused absences, which is forcing kids to come to school sick; then they spread their germs throughout the school just because they don’t want to use one of their days.” They expect us to be here everyday but if someone is sick it’s hard to concentrate in school, but they have to be here. This stigma towards the policy could just be miscommunication because students aren’t sure what’s considered excused and unexcused. They have expressed to us that if you don’t go to the hospital and get a doctor’s note, then it won’t be excused. Not all illnesses require attention from a doctor, and some kids aren’t able to see a doctor. Akimia Wilson (Class of 2019) says,” This is unfair and hurts us because it’s supposed to make attendance go up but it is not our fault that the seniors skipped class last year.” There are also major consequences if you do not adhere to the seven day policy, in which they take away your right to go to prom and luncheon. Akil Mitchell (Clas of 2019) says,” These consequences are unfair because they are judging us based on a previous class.” So in conclusion this policy is receiving a lot of backlash and not being welcomed the way it was expected too but maybe there can one day be a compromise.
