Salmonella and E. Coli Coming to Destroy Us

12 million pounds of beef have been recalled in a multistate salmonella outbreak. From July 26th, 2018 to September 7, 2018, beef products were produced under various brand names that have been linked to a strain of the salmonella outbreak. It is now known that beef produced by  JBS Tolleson is the likely source of the outbreak.

On November 26th, the CDC updated a warning that affected the United States. It says, “CDC continues to advise that U.S. consumers not eat and retailers and restaurants not serve or sell any romaine lettuce harvested from the Central Coastal growing regions of northern and central California. If you do not know where the romaine is from, do not eat it.”

So far, about 32 people have gotten sick and 11 have been hospitalized, all within 11 states, with E. coli. What does this mean for us? Arihana Figurora, ‘19 says, “I am forever instilled with a fear of contracting such an infection, I’ll literally run away from the beef and lettuce aisle at the grocery store.” I’ll have to agree, this whole situation has made me fear eating a burger because the romaine and beef could be deadly. Brandon Clincy ‘19 says, “I am completely devastated that I can not enjoy my food without fear of dying. However this provides insight to the privilege we have in a first world country, as our food is not usually like this.

Romaine lettuce and beef products have been stopped being sold in multiple grocery stores, restaurants, etc. Watch out either way!
