Nyla David is a senior at Whitney Young and a close friend of mine. I have always admired her for her determination in academics and passion for dance. She always understands when to put her grades before anything else and even when she is stressed, she always puts a smile on my face because of her loving character.

One of Nyla’s unique achievements is she has been on the Guys and Dolls dance team for 6 years. She began dancing at the age of 2 at the Hyde Park School of Dance up until she was 12 years old. At the time of leaving the dance school, Nyla came to Whitney Young and continued her dancing with Guys and Dolls. Similarly to many dancers, Nyla has had injuries throughout her time dancing, including a knee injury that her caused her severe pain. This ongoing injury has not stopped her from pursuing her love for dance.

Although Nyla loves to dance, academics have lead her to a different passion. Throughout her years at Whitney Young, she has discovered that, “dance has always been a hobby of mine, but I just don’t see myself dancing in the future.” When she goes to college, she wants to be a psychology major, and when she finishes college, she wants to become an orthopedic surgeon.
