When you were a little kid and you did something bad, how did your parents discipline you? Did they just yell at you? Were you grounded? Did your parents hit you? The American Academy of Pediatrics issued last monday a strongly worded policy statement last Monday on how parents should and should not discipline their kids. The policy statement specifically discusses the act of spanking a child. They declared the act as ineffective or harmful to young children. Pediatric Doctors actually advise parents not to spank their kids. They feel as if punishment that is nonphysical, threatening, humiliating, or scary is more effective.

Many people from different cultures often have differentiating opinions on how misbehaving children should be disciplined. Alana Lay ‘20 says, “dDepending on what the kids do, sitting them in the corner doesn’t always work. Sometimes a kid needs a spanking to let them know what they did is not okay but I wouldn’t overdue it.” Cameron Williams ‘20 says, “I think that the punishment should be based off what they did. If they did something really bad the parent should hit or scold them. However, if the action was minor they should take away meaningful things away or just yell at them to punish them.” Whitney Young students, think back to what your parents did when you misbehaved as a child. Do you think this was effective? Or do you feel as if the punishment did more bad than good? These actions are something that can shape a child’s relationship with their parents later on.
