App Review: Pinterest

Pinterest, the app where you can pin your interests. Pinterest is the app used as a digital pinboard that people use to share, save, and categorize images and ideas for everything from scrapbooking, hairstyles, gym routines, to even recipes. “Pinterest is the go-to app if you are looking to start a new project”, (Jairus Sillman ‘18). It was founded in 2009 as a website by Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra, and Evan Sharp made to be a “catalog of ideas” rather than a social network. When it was first released it did not automatically prosper. It’s real growth began in 2011 when it was voted “50 best websites of 2011” by Time Magazine. The making of this website into an app promoted its growth. The evolution of Pinterest is based on the shared interest of its users and it relies on its members to produce the content which is then shared by others. “When looking for my prom dress style, I turned to Pinterest because it offered a multitude of ideas to think of”, (Celeste Mora 18’). Pinterest is very easy to navigate. You begin on your home page which is filled with pins your software believes matches your interests. These pins are often similar to your searches or the pins that you pin to your own boards. You can use the search bar to search anything you want then the app gives you more words to help narrow down your search. “I’ve heard about Pinterest but never tried it, I guess it can be useful for searching up new cooking recipes”, (Lauren Wittenburg 19’). While Pinterest is an app made for broad searches, there are certain apps similar to Pinterest where you can focus on more narrow subjects. “Dribble” is the app for designers and artists looking to design new things. “Foodgawker” is an app inspired by Pinterest made for all the chefs looking for new recipes. While there are many similar apps Pinterest is unique and useful for anyone.
