Mateo Breaks Records and Wins The Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship

On January 10th 2017, Mateo Chavez ‘17 broke the school record in the 50 meter freestyle with a time of 21.29. The previous swim record was 21.51, held from 1984. His teammate Zaddeen Benaissa ‘18, said “he’s a very motivational leader” and “helps everyone succeed”. These qualities not only helped him achieve this great feet in swimming but in another area as well.

 

“The Chick Evans Scholarship for caddies in financial need, across 26 states and Canada”, said Chavez. Mateo Chavez was awarded this Scholarship recently and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Mateo’s achievement wasn’t only held with a school record, but he also received the Chick Evans Caddie scholarship, granting him full tuition and housing to the college of his choice. Mateo said he “caddied for 4 years, maintained above a 3.2 gpa, and kept a great caddie reputation at my country club”. He worked very hard to get him to a point where this scholarship was within his reach. “He’s a great friend and all of these achievements he’s acclaimed recently, are a testament to just how hard of a worker he is”, said Lamont Wallace ‘17. Mateo has not only become a record booked swimmer on the team but now has a future in whatever school he will choose. Congratulations Mateo on this wonderful feat!!!
